I found this music video/short film by 30 seconds to mars
today on youtube. I’m still trying to work it out. Anyways the song is called
hurricane and the video features some good bdsm scenes so I thought I’d share.
here is somone elses analysis taken from yahoo...
"One of the most important things to know about 30 Seconds To Mars,
is their intention is not to be any one thing to one person; whether it
be the lyrics, their videos or the band themselves. One of the band
members (I'm pretty sure it was Jared) said (in so many words) that he
didn't want their songs to have one set meaning. Even the band's name
(which is based on the title of a scientific paper/thesis) can have
multiple meanings. Pretty much, anything to do with 30STM is ambiguous
and left open to interpretation. And no interpretation is completely
wrong or right. The song 'The Kill' can be about a person battling the
will of another person or battling with ones own beliefs (though the
song is much more open, Jared stated that the video is of each member of
the band fighting their own demons (so to speak). If you take word
'father', which appears in several 30STM songs, 'father' can mean 'dad',
a priest or even God himself. Once again, you pick the one that feels
right for you. I think this is just one of the aspects of 30STM that is
so great. One day their songs mean one thing to us, then the next day,
depending on our mood, that meaning can change, and then change again.
As far as the meaning to 'The Hurricane', as with 'The Kill', I think the song and the video have to be treated as separate entities. As far as the song, my first impression of the song, was that it was a song about being trapped (once again this can be either trapped within ones own habits and personality or it can be someone who is trapped in an abusive/unhealthy relationship; I tend to lean more towards the latter) & how far a person would go to get out of the predicament they are in. Would they kill to save a life? Hurricane is not an actual hurricane (of course!), but a metaphore for a catastrophe or a large battle or heartship one might have to face. The 1st verse is about wanting to leave, feelng trapped, laying awake in bed, physically in the bed, but mentally elsewhere "Where did you go?". I don't think this means physically, but rather the person is using their mind as a means of escape. Then we have the chorus, pretty self-explanitory. Then the 3rd verse where he talks about dieing multiple deaths, is not a physical death, but rather a killing off of ones own identity, changing yourself, a death of the spirit. Telling lies to just to survive.. "A fire inside..." is that feeling that burns inside, all the things we want to accomplish, but so often don't. "Where is your god?" Means, where is the strength you need to do what needs to be done? Then chorus, then 4th verse "The promises we made were not enough" means we might keep saying we're going to do something but we don't follow through. "The prayers that we had prayed were like a drug" One can keep praying for a solution, but it doesn't always come, and that hope for a way out, in itself can become addictive. "The secrets that we sold were never known" means the way we manipulate ourselves around others, change our personalities just to please them, they will never know that we were pretending just to appease them.
As far as the video, it is clips of sex, violence and society with a tiny bit of war thrown in (the coffins). I'd say it's symbolism, because I have yet to read (from the band) or find a clear interpretation of the video's storyline. It seems like a series of clips meant to shock with no discernable plot. Except for each band member's character having either a sexual or violent act in common, I have yet to see what each 'storyline' has to do with the other. Even each character's individual storyline doesn't seem to have any congruity. Perhaps, the video is not meant to have any clear story but rather just get people talking and it certainly has done that! 30STM is my FAVORITE band and I think the video is visually stunning, but I hate to say, after all the great videos Jared A.K.A. Barthlomew Cubbins has made, this one has missed the mark. The song far outshines the video and deserved a better video. 30STM has always been great at riding the edge, but with this video, they went waaay over it. It's one thing to get people's attention, but do it without ostracizing yourself. There's that old saying about cutting your nose off... I've found that most Mars fans don't rewatch the video for enjoyment, but rather out of curiousity. After watching it, I've found I'm not the only one left going "Huh?" But, I still LOVE them."
